I don't understand something. In this market, it is hard to find a job. Sure, some people fall into it easily, but there are boatloads of people pounding the pavement every freaking day trying to find *anything*.

I am a long term temp at my job and I have been here about a month (this is the last day of my first four weeks). At this time, unless it was truly a dire circumstance (deathly ill/death/serious injury) I wouldn't call in sick. No way, no how. It is unprofessional. Certainly, I would call in if I Had been here for four/five/six months and I was having a bad week and needed a break, but by that point I would have established myself as responsible, and missing a day wouldn't reflect badly on my character.

A temp started on Tuesday. Today she called in sick. She is an operator, which is a very important job in a business center, and we didn't find out she wasn't going to be here until nine or so (the business center opens at 8:30).

She has been here for four days and she is calling in sick. And it isn't some huge thing (according to the agency she didn't feel well) it is just taking a sick day.

Am I the only one who thinks that is not quite right?

Nope, you're not the only one, hon. That is weird. Hell, I've been at my job almost two years, and I still feel bad taking a sick day.

Oh no, that's definitely a bit odd. I know it will be a long time before I feel comfortable taking any sick days.

When I first started teaching, I refused to take sick days. I was terribly ill over Christmas break that year with bronchitis, and I wasn't better by the time we had to go back, but I went to work anyway. My principal saw me at break that morning, took one look at me and said "Go home. Don't come back till you're 100%" That was the only thing keeping me at home. I never call in sick unless I feel like I'm dying. Even this year, I kept coming to school with borderline exhaustion until another teacher called the subline for me because they were so worried.

So, yeah. Day four and you're sick? There'd better be surgery involved, if you ask me.

That is not quite right, yeah. I can only speculate that her mindset is that she works for the temping agency itself and is therefore not so concerned about representing herself well to your specific company. Or something. It's pretty irresponsible in any case, though.

I got my job through temping. Until I saw other temps come (and go) I never realized what a standout I was. We've had some temps in our department for the past month and we're already on our 5th. I really feel like taking the one guy who is a responsible worker aside and giving him props - and he doesn't even work for me.
