It isn't called Cotillion. Cotillion is the name of the event, and event that is held all over the world. It is a cotillion. A Debutante Ball.

Calling it "Cotillion" instead of "The Cotillion" not only sounds weird, but is déclassé.

I think it's some sort of weird regional thing. I have a conniption anytime I hear things like "What are you wearing to Prom?" THE PROM! THE PROM, people!
