Labradorite

angelchickenTonight, we discuss Labradorite. Labradorite is a mineral that does not, in fact, have anything to do with dogs, though the name may fool you, oh yes! Labradorite has much to do with Labrador, Canada, which is where the mineral happens to be found. Also, surprisingly, dogs.
Some Labradorite facts:
* Labradorite is a feldspar.
* It's refractive index ranges from 1.555-1.575.
* it has a specific gravity range of 2.70-2.74.
* It is a 6-6.5 on the Mohs hardness scale (slightly less hard than Quartz).
* It is often grey to smokey black and is usually slightly transparent to translucent.
* It is triclinic and commonly exhibits twinning which produces a layered or stacked effect.
* It's luster is dull to vitreous and it streaks white.
* It displays Labradorescence, a phenomena that is, in fact, specific to Labradorite (whoda thought) that is a play of color that can cause a flash of blue, violet and/or green and sometimes orange and yellow in the light.
* It is MAD COOL and the phenomena is, in my book, one of the best. Because it looks like a piece of granite but suddenly it catches the light and it's beautiful.
