My favorite tree
Oct. 8th, 2005 03:59 pmToday I walked around Central Park. Literally.
Specifically I walked the entire perimeter drive that circles Central Park and it was fabulous. And wet, as it's been raining steadily all day.
Anne, you may say, why would you do that?
Well, my reason is twofold.
Fold one: I want to someday 'blade in Central Park but I was unsure of the road- how hilly it was and windy and stuff. I came to the conclusion that this is maybe a Springtime ambition because there were some places where I was having palpitations just thinking about huffing and puffing up the inclines. Also, I'm still trying to work out this blister thing that doesn't seem to be going anywhere. And if I am going to join the big leagues I want it to be pretty pain free.
Fold two: I never had before.
The road is 6.1 miles and I started and ended at the same place to insure I covered every inch because if I was going to do it then, damn it, I was going to do it. It took me a little under two hours which means I was walking at a 3mph-ish clip, slower than I usually walk but there were important things to do as I walked like kicking crabapples and stomping on acorns and that probably slowed me down. And I wasn't necessarily doing it for the exercise. I mean, the New York Road Runners club was there and they were doing their road-running thing and probably getting burning more calories than me, but I didn't see any of them kick a single crabapple or stomp even one acorn, so really, I think I came out on top.
And a six-mile walk it going to exercise you whether you want it to or not. Also, towards the end of the walk, when I realized I was pretty much soaked through and that my new shoes were no exception and it'd be dumb to go on a long walk in the rain wearing your new walking sneakers and not expect them to get dirty and wet, I jumped in a big puddle. And then walked through some more, merrily kicking up a huge spray as I did.
Like I said, it was a fabulous walk.
D'oh! moment: it is better to walk in the rain in a t-shirt that isn't white unless you want the world to see your black bra. Duh. Ah well, I was still more covered than most of the runners in their skimpy little jogging gear so there's that. And I have a great rack so anyone who chest-checked got a treat!
I also saw my new favorite tree in New York. This is big. I come from a long line of tree-lovers (not tree-huggers, though I can't believe that any of my family supports mass deforestation). After my dad died my mom used to spend a lot of time at the cemetery and she had a tree that she loved and sat under and wrote about and hugged (huh- I guess she is a tree-hugger) and so the behavior is totally ingrained in me.
And there are parts of Central Park where you wouldn't know you were in the city, the foliage is so dense. It's pretty wonderful. But this tree isn't there. This tree is near the 100th street turnoff (I mention so I can come back to this entry if I forget) and I'm pretty sure it was planted to be a Tree People Notice because the when viewed from the road it is framed by two other trees which make it a focal point. And it's huge and neat looking and pretty and I love it a whole lot and whenever it is I get a digital camera I will go back and take a lot of pictures of the tree and post them for everyone to see. I'm betting I'm not the only one who has claimed this to be their favorite tree, but that's the great thing about trees: they're shareable.
Then I got home, almost four hours later, and took a shower then a nap.

Last night I went to Jersey City to see my friend A. It was, of course, a blast. We had a bottle of wine and she made insanely good lentil soup and we talked about pretty much everything ever and I loved it and I love her and it was great.
Other than that my life has been uneventful. Really, really uneventful. I'm still seeing boy which is nice, but his schedule and mine do not mesh as I work days and he works nights and weekends. Ah well, we still have a great time together and that's important. I like him. He's a good guy. I didn't watch Smallville because I didn't have the energy to deal with it, I did watch Arrested Development and Kitchen Confidential because they amuse me and I watched Lost which is okay, but I don't know if I am still as into it.
trucrystal: Did I ever thank you for the wonderful tapes? Because I think I suck a lot and I haven't and I feel kind of like I huge heel. THANK YOU SO MUCH! I do love them and devoured them and I am so, so thankful you sent them to me. You rock. But I knew that. =)
And now I am going to spend the rest of the day curled up in bed, playing about on line and finishing The Fellowship of the Ring. It's a perfect day for it.
Oh! And in the EW photo issue there is a picture of George Clooney that is absolutely divine. Seriously, this picture practically took my breath away. I want to rip it out and tape it to my wall like I did in High school because it is just. that. wonderful.
