Exercise can be fun! Who knew?
Jun. 18th, 2005 03:25 pmI am a Rollerblading Goddess, if you define 'goddess' as "one who is competent enough not to fall on her ass or face during her first time on rollerblades in ten years" which I totally do.
Oh yeah. I rock.
Today I took my brand spankin' new blades out for their debut run and it was absolutely faboo. After work I hopped the train down to 33rd to go to Modell's and I was going to run to the bathroom in the Manhattan Mall first (which, yuck) and happened to pass by a blade 'n bike shop so I went there and got knee/wrist/elbow guards which were probably pricier than at Modell's but did have the convenience of not being at Modell's and also had the cute bike 'n blade guys who were all helpful and besides, with the dosh I got from my mom and sister for my b-day I ended up not spending any of my money anyway so that rocks the hiz-zouse but I digress.
Oh! And the cast of Degrassi was doing a signing at a Vid store which totally made me think of
caltrask55! Hi Cal!
But it was also cool to go to the b 'n' b place because the guy working there suggested that I go to Chelsea Piers and blade on the path there because it isn't nearly as packed as Central Park and it's right along the Hudson which is pretty neat. And since I don't think I've ever been down that particular stretch of the West Side I thought that seemed like a swell ides. Especially as my original plan was to go to the park by the Flatiron Building and just circle around that a few times while getting used to the wheels. And in addition to all the protection (you should always use protection according to the little tag attached to my wheels. Good advice for much of life, I think) I bought socks. No, excuse me, Attack Socks which I must say is excellent and I have been feeling my socks are far too docile. Fear me and my vicious socks!
Anyway, the whole thing rocked. I ended up doing basically the entire lower part of the path (down to Battery Park) which is a little over three miles! GO ME!! And it doesn't feel like three miles at all, though it very well may tomorrow. I passed all sorts of cool things, like a guy on a scooter with a huge front wheel and tiny back wheel (like the old fashioned bikes) and a trapeze place and mini-golf and lots of sunbathers. And did I mention the fun?
The only problem I seem to have (other than the occasional wobble) is that I don't know how to stop. At the moment I use one of three methods:
A) The roll into a lamp post/street sign/trash can and hold my arms in front of be to buffer the stop.
B) Roll until I run out of momentum and stop
C) The 'T' stop- something I learned in my years of figure skating. And while this is an effective method it is also a way to quickly destroy my wheels. I've got to get out of that habit (my other figure skate stop involves the toe pick (Tooooooooe piiiick) but as the toe of my Rollerblades is actually a wheel it doesn't transfer) or I'll be buying new wheels quite soon. I guess it just takes time. I'll get it, gosh darn it! I know I will!
Other than that life is blah. Went to the dentist (LOVE) and only need two small fillings and then my teeth are done, done, done. Went to the eye-doctor and my prescription is the same. Saw Mad Hot Ballroom which was faboo save for the mildly psycho teacher who very much rubbed me the wrong way. And I went to the Women's Press collective which is a volunteer press thingee that seemed interesting but is, in fact, kind of militant. I was going to go back to see about getting another feel for the place, but now I'm thinking that I won't. My roommate had an excellent point: this is New York. There are far too many volunteer organizations to waste time at one where you aren't wholly comfortable. And you know what? I wasn't wholly comfortable. I fully support what they do, and respect their politics and do agree with them on many points, but the people and the whole experience was really not my cup of tea. And I really don't want to get into a giant political debate, but the word 'Fascist' is not a catch phrase and it seriously pisses me off when people treat it like that. This is essentially why JM and I will never be. Poor boy doesn't know what he's going to be missing. But, I'm sorry, you just don't bandy it about all willy-nilly. Grr.
I need to take a nap.
Maybe tomorrow I’ll try Prospect Park. Oh! And stop by the street fair, too! I do so love a street fair.

Date: 2005-06-19 04:50 am (UTC)And yeah, I meant to say that the hockey stop probably wouldn't work for you, since you mentioned the wobblediness.

Date: 2005-06-19 02:47 am (UTC)I so wanted to go to that and almost did. Emily and I were trying to figure out ways to make it work but unfortunately, we couldn't find the time to get there and get back before her family's father's day celebration. :(

Date: 2005-06-20 03:07 pm (UTC)And a big yay for the blades! Your day of blading sounds awesome, and rollerblading in NYC just gives you the best feeling, doesn't it? I know I've said this gazillion times already, but we most definitely have to go rollerblading:)
Eek, one more thing and I'll end this rambly comment: I'd hold off on Central Park until you feel a bit more confident. Prospect Park loop is good practice b/c it's set up similarly, but it's quieter and the hills aren't as extreme. People in Central Park are also a little bit...meaner, maybe - there are lots of crazy bikers who get pissed if you get in their way. Once you're used to it, it's fine, but at first, it can be fairly terrifying.
Have fun blading!

Date: 2005-06-20 09:40 pm (UTC)And I am definitely holding off on Central Park. I am not nearly confidant enough to dare brave the trail. But I hope I am by the end of the Summer. It's totally a goal.
And we will totally go blading. I just need a scootch more practice so I can keep up. =D
