So. As you may know, I read a lot of fic. Gobs of it. Heaps of it. Well, a lot, in any case.

And something I've noticed in a lot of fic is that when one is feeling . . . lustful, shall we say, their eyes darken and soon there is only a little edge of [insert eye color here] because their pupils have dilated with wanting.

Yesterday I went to the eye doctor for the follow up appointment. I, myself, got to experience the joy of dilated eyes for an entire evening. And once my vision came back (stupid drops. Could read the headline on the paper the guy two seats in front of me was reading just fine, but try to pick out a word in my one book and nuthin'. Feh) I was able to actually see my eyes in a state of semi-perma-dilation.

Final consensus. I didn't look so much lustful so much as . . . anime. And kind of creepy.

Alls I know is if I was getting hot and heavy with someone and they looked at me with eyes like mine last night (biiiig pupils, thin edge of brown) I would probably shriek and hit them.

Also? Do eyes even dilate as a result of strong emotion? Isn't it purely a sensory thing? Like, light goes on, pupils contract. Light goes off, they dilate. It's so you can see. And when there is light you're pupils contract to protect the insides of the eyeball from harm and also, you don't need as much light intake to see.

Are phantom lights being turned off in every fic I read without my being aware? Are dilated pupils really sexy? Is anime sexy?

Clearly I have put far too much thought into this.

Also? I'm pimping [livejournal.com profile] summer_of_spike even thought it is temporarily closed because [livejournal.com profile] canadia_bit started a group that is all about Spike and during the summer and even if you don't join you can watch and reap (reap, I say!) the benefits.

Also? [livejournal.com profile] sunbrae, I am so glad you are safe and okay. Tornadoes are scary. *hugs*. And I'm glad you like the onsie! SeaMonkey needs to be representin', yo!

Also? I forgot. Back to contemplating the sexiness of dilated eyes. And looking at my sex-sex-sexy icon. Mmmm, Firth.

Do eyes even dilate as a result of strong emotion?

"As a woman becomes sexually excited, her breathing and heart rate increase. Her lips become pink, her pupils dilate and her nipples become erect."

My impression from the classes I've taken and the reading I've done is that the pupil dilation isn't nearly as dramatic as your eye drops. It's more subtle, and impacts the partner more subconsciously. On some level, the guy's body reacts to observing the dilated pupils, even if he isn't aware that that's why... I don't think it's usually the case that the guy even registers the pupil change.

I don't know how I know any of this, so I assume I learned it in school. Go figure. And assume I could be very well wrong about some of the details.

Pupils do dilate with pleasure/arousal/excitement. Generally just a bit, I think, not all the way or anything. I don't think it's *just* a sexual thing. But it's a measurable physiological indicator of pleasure. If you look at something you like, your pupils dilate a little, like, your body wants to see whatever thing a little more. And it's a kind of an unconscious social indicator, too. People with larger pupils are considered more friendly than those with smaller pupils. I also have some factoid lurking in my brain about the pupils and the cervix dilating concurrently, but I imagine that's *just* in terms of pleasure response, not all the time. At least, I hope so. That'd be really weird if your cervix dilated every time you walked into a darkened room. Or when you got your eyedrops.

I'm working on a Summer of Spike solution. Sign-ups will probably open back up. You will be participating when that happens, yes?
