Huh. A wee bit 'o FYI

So. Ghost of the Robot's going to be playing in New York. On Long Island, to be specific. In Farmingdale, to be even more specific (which freaks me out a bit as Farmingdale is a town I know! It's right next to Stupid Ex's hometown. Gah.) At a club whose name I can't remember and can't be bothered to look up. But if you follow the link you can look it up. Yay for links!
I think the date said June 3rd, but I could be very wrong. Don't quote me on that.
First: A disclaimer. I am a slut for JM. Those of you that know me or read my journal in a lurking type way (friend me! I love friends! And I'm a whore for attention! And I'm not even posting about the bad job anymore, though I do dream about Dina on a weekly basis which makes me think that maybe I should have some hypnotherapy done and just eliminate those five months . . . but I digress) know that I love Spike/JM and well, that's about it. I think he is a spectacular actor, criminally handsome and very passionate. He's also a geek, but so am I and that's all good. In sum: I love JM. I do. I really do.
That being said . . .
Dude should not be fronting a band. Should not be lead singer. Seriously. He just looks awkward on stage (which I know, having seen him in Chicago last May) and his singing is not great. What he should do is have someone else front the band and take over lead vocals so he could stand on the side playing his guitar (which he does do quite well, thank you) and looking smolderingly hot.
And I hate to say that because it is glaringly obvious that he loves being up there and singing lead and it's like his teenaged wet-dream come true (delicious is the word I think he used on Craiggers Kilby). But James. Sweetie. You just don't have the pipes. And you are, quite possibly, the whitest boy in America. Possibly Europe as well.
Boy stands up on stage 'dancing' and occasionally flashing a really freaking Spike-like glance at the audience, but mostly it's kind of painful.
There. I said it. It's taken me time and a lot of internal debate to get to this point, but I have to say it. He kind of sucks.
And it's a shame because the rest of the band is actually really good. Very talented youth. And I gotta wonder if they sit around - whilst James is off making the big(ger) bucks by playing the sexiest vampire that ever did sex - and talk amongst themselves about the predicament they are in. Because they need James to get the fans (at least they did at first, and probably still do, at least to some extent) but James is really dragging them down. Because there are definitely some huge fans of GotR out there, and I totally don't begrudge them that. What I state is only my opinion. But it's got to be hard. Unless they think he's actually really good, in which case, they deserve his lead vocals.
So yeah. That's the point of my story. Would I want to get tickets? No. But . . . there are moments where he is just obscenely sexy, even more so than on TV, and I could bring a walkman, or practice some sort of meditative tuning out that allows me to see the pretty but not listen to the bad words.
Such a quandary.
And I use my new Spike icon - again by
yindagger - because I think it's appropriate for this post that went on far, far longer than I expected it would.

Date: 2004-04-09 06:27 pm (UTC)Except. I saw the band in a showcase at House of Blues on Sunset last summer, and it was not deathly painful. JM sang almost completely in-key, the majority of the crowd was not there to see them, so he wasn't a complete attention whore, in that painful, goofy way. In short, they were pretty good!
That said, um, yeah. Word.
And that said? I might still go see them at the end of the month because

Oh, I agree. I personally think he has a great voice, but that's just me. I don't like GotR. I've tried. And I've tried. And I've tried. And I've tried. But I just can't get no satifaction from it.

Sorry about the abuse of the Stones song. ;-)
