No, no, it's Saturday. But whenever I think of lazy Saturdays, I think of the Simpson’s and Homer. Ahh, Homer, you big so 'n so.

I have a Question. For all of my friendly stick drivers (cars, not penises. Manual, standard, five-gear. Get your minds out of the gutter!).

So. Say you’re driving. And you are in third or fourth. La, la, la. And suddenly, you see that the traffic light you are approaching is turning from green to yellow, fast on its way to becoming red. It is too far away from you to blow through the yellow, so you decelerate, and eventually come to a stop.

Do you down shift as you slow down? Or do you just shift into neutral? And are you supposed to do one over the other?

Here is why I ask.

I just shift into neutral. And when I am on the highway, and traffic slows down, I shift into neutral and coast until I need to accelerate again, then I slip into the appropriate gear. Is that bad?

I basically taught myself to drive my car. Oh, sure, I spent an hour or two in the Day School parking lot driving in circles in the Cooper's Wrangler, trying to get the feel of getting into first without stalling (the absolute hardest part of learning to drive stick. Everything after that is gravy).

But other than that I am basically self-taught. First, driving the car home from the dealership, then driving around the side streets of my town, working on getting the feel of the car. I didn't even think of downshifting, since you can easily get into neutral. And I kept remembering the man who taught me to drive (and automatic, though) telling me about how he and his friends would always put the car in neutral when they came to hills and build up speed (it's fun).

So, to sum up, what do you do when you slow down? Just 'cause I'm curious.



I got my period today. Wheee! How lovely to be a woman! /sarcasm

I got my period a wee bit over 14 years ago (August 29th, 1989. My second day of eights grade. I was wearing dark lavender undies and white shorts, but I discovered it fast enough that there wasn't an incident, something for which I am profoundly grateful. But not the point). In my 14 menstrual years I have gone though phases with and without cramps. I have been on the pill twice. And when I wasn't on the pill I was horribly irregular. Especially when I was really sexually active (thanks reproductive system. Like I really need that added stress in college).

But today I got my period. And my first thought was "Huh. I'm early." because I thought I was. But guess what?

I counted (I mark on the calendar the first day) and not only am I not early, but I am absolutely and perfectly regular!!!!!

Those of you freakish alien types who have never know the pain of an irregular period (you know who you are. You are the one who say "Oh! Is it three thirty-seven and twenty seconds! Oops. Let me get a panty liner. My period is starting and I am just going to be a mess for the next six hours or so. Thank goodness it'll be over by the time I wake up tomorrow for my eight mile light jog and my wheatgrass shot. Mmmmm, refreshing!" What? Bitter? Me?)

I digress.

My point is, yesterday was Day 28 which means that today is the day I get my period and I did! ME! Regular! This is so huge I feel like I should be putting ads in the New York Times and possibly throwing some huge gala or something.

See. That is all. I'm happy! Tra la la! And I drove my car on my walk route earlier (how the whole car thing came up) and I walk three miles on this route. Which is freaking excellent. I do it in 45 minutes, which means I walk four miles an hour, which is kind of what I was shooting for. I'll get it up, but for now I am satisfied. *happy sigh*

Now I have to go shower and figure out what to wear to dinner tonight. I am going out with friends I hardly ever see, and I love them in small doses but I need to look fabulous. It's a thing.
