I have a G-Drive that I really like. It has tons of room and is easy to connect to my laptop (I don't keep it attached all the time because laptops are mobile and external hard drives are also mobile but cumbersome. And I don't have a desk).
I got my G-Drive at the Apple Store. It has 250GB which is fine for me (I don't use huge things at the mo'. No movies or anything).
Here is some information about it (http://g-technology.com/products/g-drive.cfm).
I know, when I purchased it, it wasn't the top quality drive. I went specifically for least expensive. And I have been happy with it ever sense.
I am sorry your Mac is on the way out. So frustrating and stressful!
